How Do You Find Your Audience?

How Do You Find Your Audience?

That’s right. You only need to know this super important mission critical piece of information to blog for your small business successfully.

The only thing that you need to know is who your audience is. That’s it. Case closed. Nice talking to ya. Back to being serious. Knowing your audience and what they like to read, watch and what makes them tick is the only thing that matters when you get down to the nitty-gritty.

If you don’t know who you are creating content for, what is the point? You are wasting your precious time doing something that is not going to pay off in the long run.

Now flip that around, if you are creating content that you know is going to be devoured and shared by your loyal customers, you are going to pour your heart and soul into each piece of content because you know that your work will be rewarded with warm leads, sales, and increased brand visibility.

So how do you go about figuring out who your audience is in the first place?

How To Discover Your Audience

Well, I can proceed to tell you that you need to create a buyers persona, blah, blah, blah. I just nodded off, did you? I linked to a HubSpot blurb explaining what a buyers persona is. They did it in under 100 words. I can do them one better. Here is mine “Who buys your stuff?”. Boom. Mic drop. 4 words. That’s what a buyer’s persona is all about. Nothing more. Nothing less. Now that you got that concept down, what’s next? Start collecting data.

As a small business owner using high-powered analytics are not going to be in the cards, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get general information from your customers. We are going to use some decidedly low-tech options to get the job done.

Survey Your Audience

An oldy but goody in my opinion. Who doesn’t like taking a quick survey especially if it includes some kind of incentives for participation such as a discount or free swag? Everybody loves free swag, just saying.

The beauty of a survey is that it is non-threatening, and most people are comfortable taking them. You can structure questions to get useful information without being intrusive.

There are plenty of online survey platforms to choose from. My personal favorites are Survey Monkey, Zoho Survey, and Google Forms. All three are simple and easy to use.

Asking simple questions about demographics and about the products that your customers’ purchase should yield a sufficient amount of data that you can use to craft content that is geared towards your audience. See easy peasy, right?
